Ocimum basilicum ‘Genovese’

Genovese Basil

Herb - Annual

Light Requirements: Full sun to part shade

Size: 1-2 ft tall x 1.5 ft wide

Water: Regular watering

To make it thrive: Plant in well drained rich soil. Cut back (harvest) early and often to promote bushiness, but don’t cut too much at a time as it might make the plant become weak. Keep pinching flowers off - as that will be a sign of the end of your basil plant.

Favored habitat: Doesn’t like temperatures under 50. Plant in well drained soil in a warm sunny spot, protected from hot afternoon sun and wind.

Other: Genovese Basil is a great basil for pesto or any dish or drink that calls for your regular ol’ basil. I recommend growing indoors in a sunny window sill instead of outside - that’s where we’ve had the best luck! Or outside in a container.

Deer Tolerant: Yes

Coastal Exposure: No

Container compatible: Yes

Nepeta mussinii

Catmint

Herb - Perennial-

Light Requirements: Full sun to part shade

Size: 1-1.5ft tall x 1-1.5 ft wide

Water: Regular watering. Drought tolerant once established.

To make it thrive: Plant in well drained soil, in a space with good air circulation. Don’t over fertilize. Cut back plants after first blooms to keep the plant shape nice and to encourage more flowers. Wait until Spring to cut back the spent stems so that they protect the crown through the winter.

Favored habitat: Average well drained soil in a sunny spot with good air circulation.

Other: Blooms all Summer. Super easy plant that the bees will LOVE! Cat’s like it and the plant itself is arguably more attractive than catnip.

Matricaria recutita

Bodegold Chamomile

Herb - Annual

Light Requirements: Full sun

Size: 2-2.5 ft tall 2 ft wide

Water: Regular watering

To make it thrive: Pick spent blooms

Favored habitat: Plant in well drained soil

Other: Attracts butterflies and bees. This variety produces flowers earlier than other varieties of Chamomile. Air dry blossoms and make a pineapple-scented tea. Will reseed if left to do so.

Deer Resistant: Yes

Coastal Exposure: Somewhat, may need to stake plants in windy sites.

Container compatible: Yes

Foeniculum vulgare var.

Smokey Bronze Fennel

Herb - Perennial

Light Requirements: Full sun

Size: 4-5 ft tall 2-3 ft wide

Water: Regular watering, drought tolerant once established.

To make it thrive: Fertilize once a year in Spring.

Favored habitat: Plant in well drained soil.

Other: Attracts butterflies, ladybugs, & lace wings. Beautiful plants with coppery leaves and lacy golden flowers that produce anise flavored seeds. Season seafood, salads, or vegetables with leaves. Or make a delicious tea. Plants will grow 4-5ft tall and die back in winter. Cut almost to the ground and watch them grow tall every year. Will reseed itself… sometimes too much! So keep an eye out to prevent it from taking over - or cut stems before they release their seeds.

Deer Resistant: Yes

Coastal Exposure: Yes

Container compatible: Yes, but I would pick a large container.

Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote Blue’

Hidcote Blue English Lavender

Herb - Perennial

Light Requirements: Full sun

Size: 1-2 ft tall x 1-2 ft wide

Water: Regular watering. Drought tolerant once established.

To make it thrive: Cut back to one half the size after flowering to encourage more flowers. Prune every year to avoid leggy growth.

Favored habitat: Plant in well drained soil in a sunny spot. Avoid heavy, soggy soil. Fertilize in Spring.

Other: Compact habit with deep purple flower spikes in Summer. English lavenders (Lavandula angustifolia) have the highest oil content of any lavender. Making them the most fragrant of lavenders and the best choice if you’re wanting to make oils, sachets, or food. Attracts bees.

Mentha x villosa

Mojito Mint

Herb - Perennial

Light Requirements: Full sun to part sun

Size: 1-2 ft tall and spreading

Water: Regular watering. Drought tolerant once established.

To make it thrive: Keep harvesting or cutting back to prevent leggy growth. Cut out old stems. Fertilize in Spring.

Favored habitat: Plant in well drained soil in a sunny spot.

Other: This is THE mint for drinks! And other food too.  It is mild but still packs a punch of mint flavor. Grows fast and will take over. Would be great in a container to prevent that! Leaves best used fresh but can be dried and stored in an airtight container. Blooms purple flowers in Summer.

Origanum x majoricum

Italian Oregano

Herb - Perennial

Light Requirements: Full sun

Size: 1-2 ft tall x 1 ft wide

Water: Regular watering. Drought tolerant once established.

To make it thrive: Cut back in Spring before flowering to maintain bushy growth. Fertilize in Spring.

Favored habitat: Plant in well drained soil in a sunny spot.

Other: Italian Oregano is a cross between Sweet Marjoram and Wild Marjoram. Not as intense a flavor as Greek Oregano. This is my favorite oregano to cook with! Blooms white flowers in Summer which attract bees. Very easy perennial that works well just as a landscape plant!

Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Huntington Carpet’

Huntington Carpet Rosemary

Water: Regular watering. Drought tolerant once established.

To make it thrive: Cut back in Spring before flowering to maintain bushy growth. Fertilize in Spring.

Favored habitat: Plant in well drained soil in a sunny spot.

Other: Fast growing rosemary is a great choice for the coast... A fragrant evergreen shrub that you can eat too! Hardly needs any care - the blue flowers in early Spring attract bees. This variety spreads up to 8 feet. Would be great for a retaining wall, in a container, or use as a ground cover. If you feel you must prune - do it in Spring after flowers.

Pineapple Sage

Herb - Perennial

Light Requirements: Full sun

To make it thrive: Cut back in Fall after flowering or early Spring to keep shape and to prevent leggy, woody stems. Fertilize in Spring.

Favored habitat: Plant in well drained soil in a sunny spot.

Other: An amazing landscape plant that you can eat too! This large growing herbaceous perennial reaches 4 ft tall +. Red flowers in Summer to Fall attract hummingbirds. These are very easy to care for and are one of my favorite plants! Leaves can be used in tea, cocktails, food, potpourris and more.
